Captain America #606-610— “No Escape”
To prove to Steve that he had truly changed, Helmut Zemo used the power of the moonstones to restore the items he had destroyed when he and the Masters of Evil attacked Avengers Mansion. He also gave Cap a key that would allow him to escape from the prison that Reed Richards, Hank Pym, and the Radioactive Man were building.
This, of course, was just a ploy to get key players on his side so he would have every advantage available to him when he makes a run at immortality just to prove that he’s better than everyone else.
Helmut Zemo is a huge jerk.

One of the saddest Steve Rogers moments.
Out of all the villains Steve has ever had, the new Baron Zemo aka Helmut Zemo is probably the meanest, cruelest, son of a bitch who is not just content by destroying Captain America! But he has to destroy Steve Rogers emotionally as well,
In Avengers vol 1 #277 not only does Zemo break into Avengers mansion and Steve’s friends, but he destroys every single scrapbook, photo, and relic of Steve’s memories
Including the only photo of Sarah Rogers, Steve’s mother.
There are times when Helmut Zemo is really close to taking the spot for Steve Roger’s worst enemy from the Red Skull. Not to mention Bucky’s worst enemy since he was also the one who exposed Bucky as the Winter Soldier to the world, destroying his image and his career as Captain America.
Also I want Monica back with the Avengers, or at least some new Nextwave stuff.
During the Civil War, a “reformed” Helmut Zemo used the Moonstones to return these items back to Steve.
I like the idea of Helmut being Bucky’s nemesis, because they are both successors to their respective titles, along with the revenge plot he undertook during the No Escape story. (Helmut was bitter that everyone had forgiven Bucky for his past, yet they still resented him despite Helmut saving the world several times with the Thunderbolts)
I look forward to Bucky and Helmut’s rivalry being revived when Bucky comes back (you know it’s going to happen), and Helmut’s plot to destroy Steve in the new Captain America ongoing is shaping up to be pretty interesting.
